Sgt. Anthony Park

Neighborhood Association Meeting

7pm, THURSDAY, August 15th!

Hello neighbors!

Lots going on this month:

1.       The next Sgt. Anthony Neighborhood Association meeting will take place at 7pm in Sgt. Anthony Park before the movie THURSDAY, August 15th.

If you have ever thought about taking part in the association, please come to this month’s meeting. Unfortunately, my career has called me away from Jersey City, and I will be stepping down as the association president as of September 1, 2024. Without some investment in the organization by people in the neighborhood, the Sgt. Anthony Park Neighborhood Association is in danger of dissolving, which means no more yoga programs, no more parties for the kids, no more information about real estate development issues in the neighborhood and no one to advocate for the park with the city. We have been holding meetings for months with only the officers in attendance or one or two other people. This email goes out to a pretty big mailing list, but no one comes to the meetings. The other officers will carry on, but we could really use some help. There is still so much that needs to be done—we can’t do it alone!

2.       Now on to the fun stuff—right after the Association meeting on Thursday, at about 8:30pm (sundown!) the park will host Migration as part of the JC Movies in the Park program. Come, bring a blanket or a chair, a snack, and your kiddos!

3.       Also of interest:

a.       Christ Hospital is collecting new school supplies through their program “Katie’s Kids”, which is in its 23rd year. If you bring a school supply donation to the meeting on August 15th, we will make sure Christ Hospital receives the material. Or if you live nearby Christ or another CarePoint hospital, take your donation directly there. They have a big, waist-high bin for collecting the school supplies in the lobby near the receptionist. They will be collecting items until September 2nd.

b.       Regarding the cuts to the NJ Transit bus routes in Hudson, Passaic, and Bergen counties, Academy Bus will assume service of the NJ Transit routes #2, 84, and 88 in Hudson County from Coach USA. Schedules, fares, routes, bus stops, etc. will continue as before, and customers should continue to purchase tickets in the same way they previously did.

c.       Open Hours continue in the community garden on Sundays from 4-6pm until Labor Day, in case you’ve ever wanted to look inside or sit down among the plants on one of the benches. If you do happen to see the gate open after that, it means a gardener is working, and you’re welcome to come in and look around. If you’re interested in volunteering to help with the garden, either in the community garden or the park’s planted areas, email the association (sgtanthonypark@gmail.com) to be put in touch with the head gardener.

d.       Yoga continues through August 27 on Tuesdays at 7pm.

e.       Finally, Councilman Richard Boggiano invites everyone to come to the City Council meeting tomorrow, August 14th at 6pm (280 Grove St. 2nd floor—parking is free at the back of the building and the lot on Montgomery St.) where he will be presenting his Affordable Housing Amendment for District 1 and District 3. According to his flyer, “When I started this process two years ago, I wanted affordable housing without giving developers bonus density. Through the process, I learned that the city believes we must offer ‘accommodations’ or bonus density to incentivize the developers to build affordable housing…. Hilltop Neighborhood Association and McGinley Square Community Group asked that these accommodations be restricted to Districts 1 & 3. The Journal Square Community Association is still pushing for these accommodations to be offered in all the districts. That means that developers can build taller than they are currently permitted.” You can call Tammy Richardson, City Council Administrator, at 201-547-5053 or email trichardson@jcnj.org and tell her to send your message to City Council members or show up at the meeting tomorrow night and speak your mind.

Thanks for your fellowship over the last nine years. The Sgt. Anthony Park neighborhood is full of wonderful people who go out of their way to take care of each other. Please consider taking care of the Association as well by coming to the meeting on Thursday at 7pm and keeping this organization alive with your participation.

Sincerely,

Kim Guinta, SAPNA President, 2024
